Your report ‘First court, now police called in to sort church dispute between sects’ (PM, May 27) regarding the Mar Thoma and CNI’s disagreement over worship rights in a Garrison church, owned by the defence department, made for interesting reading. How did 3.5 acres of prime defence land become the property of the Church of North India? The government should investigate the authenticity of such claims, so that valuable national assets are not easily taken away by people or organisations with vested interests. It is surprising to note the strange silence of local military authorities on such important issues. Who would have thought that the right to ‘pray’ would result in a volley of complaints between two sects. One would expect that those with religious beliefs would learn to coexist, but in this case the sects are clearly intolerant of each other. But when it comes to religion, there is rarely a peaceful outcome. Look at instances like the Babri Masjid issue and Iran’s intolerance of Israel. I would rather lead a life that is not cluttered with these petty issues. The enemies of green Irresponsible Medipoint It was wonderful to read how residents of Aundh rushed to help those patients who were trapped at Medipoint Hospital on Saturday. In a time where very few people go out of their way to help others, it was wonderful to see how residents, not caring about their own lives, helped fire brigade officials and the police. Kudos!
