Church dispute on govt land

Posted On Monday, May 28, 2012 at 08:55:08 AM

Your report ‘First court, now police called in to sort church dispute between sects’ (PM, May 27) regarding the Mar Thoma and CNI’s disagreement over worship rights in a Garrison church, owned by the defence department, made for interesting reading. How did 3.5 acres of prime defence land become the property of  the Church of North India? The government should investigate the authenticity of such claims, so that valuable national assets are not easily taken away by people or organisations with vested interests. It is surprising to note the strange silence of local military authorities on such important issues.

Who would have thought that the right to ‘pray’ would result in a volley of complaints between two sects. One would expect that those with religious beliefs would learn to coexist, but in this case the sects are clearly intolerant of each other. But when it comes to religion, there is rarely a peaceful outcome. Look at instances like the Babri Masjid issue and Iran’s intolerance of Israel. I would rather lead a life that is not cluttered with these petty issues.

  The enemies of green

This is in response to your report ‘Tree killing spree along Mutha bank’ (PM, May 27). It was disheartening to read how irresponsibly the State irrigation department has chopped down two fully-grown trees in spite of sincere efforts from a vigiliant citizen like Jayashree Edgaonkar to stop them. The police should file a complaint against them and take stringent action otherwise the Mutha river will not have a single tree on its banks. It is time we woke up and tried to stop the climate of our city from getting worse.

  Irresponsible Medipoint

Your news item ‘Fire guts Aundh hosp’s ‘illegal’ fourth floor’ (PM, May 27) shed light on a very important aspect when it comes to illegal structures. Even though no patients or staff of Medipoint Hospital in Aundh were injured, the hospital in fact had misused open terrace space and converted it into a fourth floor. This must have caused fire brigade officials some difficulty to get to the spot and douse the fire. I think the hospital should be held accountable for endangering the lives of patients and staff members.

It was wonderful to read how residents of Aundh rushed to help those patients who were trapped at Medipoint Hospital on Saturday. In a time where very few people go out of their way to help others, it was wonderful to see how residents, not caring about their own lives, helped fire brigade officials and the police. Kudos!

  Another Nadal-Djokovic treat

The French Open that’s begun is going to be a treat for all tennis lovers. While Nadal is gong to battle his hardest to win his seventh record title, Djokovic is going to try his best to win four major tennis tournaments. What a thrill it will be!
