Bittersweet treat

  Arthur’s Theme

This beautiful Italian dessert at Arthur’s Theme is spongy, consistent and creamy to the last bite. With the layers of coffee and cake beautifully balanced, the tiramisu is served with a spoonful of whipped cream on the side. What is unusual here is the sprinkling of chocolate powder on this coffee-based pastry.

The dessert has an interesting combination of ingredients, and apart from the bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the chocolate, the dash of rum stands out and makes for a lovely blend. You’ll fall in love with Arthur’s Theme for its charming interiors and delicious array of Continental cuisine, and some pretty well-made cocktails too.

Location: Lane 6, Koregaon Park
Price: Rs 130

  Grub shup

Walk into this inconspicuous joint and you’ll be surprised to sample one of the most authentic tiramisus in the entire city for the least price! Bitter, just the way I like it, it comes as a large pastry to sate your sweet tooth.

The atmosphere is perfect here to enjoy the delicious treat with a good book. It is chilled to perfection and doesn’t let the taste of rum overwhelm the other flavours.

The pastry is not too heavy here – the cream seems to come lightly whipped, the cake is super soft (almost melts in your mouth) and there is just a light sprinkling of coffee powder.

Also don’t miss the interesting combinations of ‘skoops’ and breads they offer, or their rather delicious Karimbhoy Pitawich, all off an extremely interesting menu card that is peppered with fun facts and humourous trivia.

Location: Intersection of Law College Road and Canal Road
Price: Rs 70

  Pune Baking Company

One of the things that sets the tiramisu here apart is that it is served in a glass, rather than on a plate. Unlike the standard brown and cream pastry, one gets layers of delicious cake and cream topped off with a sprinkling of coffee powder set in a container.

On not-a-very-hungry day, the tiramisu here is more than enough for two. Enjoyable at first, one’s tastebuds do eventually tend to get a bit overpowered by the whipped cream over the more meagre traces of cake. The cream, however, is pleasingly light but the cake is ordinary enough.

Don’t miss the delightful croissants or sandwiches here, and if the tiramisu is not your deal, the New York Cheesecake probably will be. This place is perfect to impress someone on a first date, since it is located in the lovely interiors of the Marriott Hotel.

Location: Marriott Hotel and Convention Centre, Senapati Bapat Road
Price: Rs 110

  Polka Dots

At Polka Dots, you’re always on the lookout for what is that day’s special on the Chef’s Menu. Regardless, the tiramisu is something you can opt for with your eyes shut! As a regular at this amazing restaurant, I can vouch for the consistency of the food here.

They serve one of the city’s best-tasting tiramisus, well-presented as well. The perfect amalgamation of cake and cream and traces of rum will make you revisit this choice for sure. Layered to perfection from all sides and perfectly sized, the dessert has a great combination of the sweet and bitter here.

This is a recommended way to finish your meal here, after chowing down on something delicious from their spectacular array of global cuisine. Known for its Death By Chocolate, visitors are also recommended to sample their authentic Blueberry Cheesecake and All-American Chocolate Pecan Nut Pie.

Location: Parihar Chowk, Aundh and Kalyani Nagar
Price: Rs 113

  Darios

‘Pick me up’ — the literal translation of the word ‘tiramisu’, best describes how they offer it up at Darios. The coffee-soaked, delightful preparation here is worth the money, especially since it comes not just with wonderful flavour, but also quaint seating and an arty ambience.

I have had countless variations of the tiramisu, but the one made by Dario Dezio himself is not-to-be-missed. This beautiful piece (yes, it looks amazing too!) melts in your mouth and the coffee flavour lingers on just a bit longer than the rest.

The cream is suitably light, and the amount of sweetness is so perfect that it will have you kissing your fingertips Italian style! The rest of the lovely (vegetarian) Italian cuisine on the menu here is another treat in itself, like the excellent wood-fired pizzas, or the absolute melt-in-the-mouth gnocci.

But do keep some place for this lovely dessert, which you can perhaps wash down with some wine from their comprehensive array.

Location: Koregaon Park, Lane 1
Price: Rs 180
