Death stalked the streets of Pune for over 30 minutes on Wednesday morning in the form of a State Transport (ST) bus driven by Santosh Maruti Mane, who left a trail of death and broken limbs not to mention mangled remains of vehicles in the wake of what looks like a fit of unexplained killer rage.
A Honda Activa lies wedged between an autorickshaw and an SUV near Swargate on Wednesday
At last count, 11 were confirmed dead while nearly a dozen others were seriously injured. The city police were still counting the number of injured lying in hospitals across parts of the city.
Mane, 40, a driver with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), randomly “hijacked” a parked bus MH 14 BT 1532 that had arrived minutes ago from Satara at the busy Swargate depot around 8 am before going on the rampage, smashing vehicles and pedestrians during the morning rush hour. At the end of his death drive, he had covered nearly 15 kilometres through busy areas.
Eye witness account
Eyewitnesses recalled the ST bus hurtling down at very high speed and on the wrong side. Wilson Mantode saw grown-ups grabbing and pulling the children to safety from the “psychopath at the wheels”. The bus crushed his Honda Activa parked on the road side. “It was shocking, as if an angel of death had taken over the streets,” he said.
Police commissioner Meeran Borwankar said Mane had smashed the barriers and grazed past a PMPML bus placed by the police in an attempt to stop him. “The police fired ten rounds to deflate the tyres. Citizens came forward and literally threw children from the roads to the safety of the footpaths. He was in such a dangerous mood. The damage was tremendous,” she said.
It was a daring act by Sharif Ibrahim Kutty, a 21-year-old student from Poona College, that brought Mane’s death ride to a halt in Dandekar Bridge area around 8.45 am. Sharif and another youngster, Ashish Khot, chased the bus on their two-wheelers for nearly 10 kilometres from Kasewadi. It was Sharif who got inside the bus and overpowered Mane.
The chase to stop the bus had begun right where it started. Driver Santosh Hendre was the first to notice Mane trying to flee with the bus he had just driven in from Satara. He, along with traffic controller Ajit Limaye, tried to stop him on the bus stop premises, but he sped away hitting autorickshaws and handcarts parked at the out gate, recalled Limaye.
Hendre had alighted from the bus to make an arrival entry on the official register inside Limaye’s cabin. Mane apparently used the master key in his possession to start the bus. The rampage
He initially headed towards Satara Road only to return back to the bus stop, where he mauled a youth to death, and then ploughed the bus into the wrong lane and sped towards Golibar Maidan.
He did several circular rounds on the one-way in the vicinity of Golibar Maidan and then moved on to M G Road, East Street, Kasewadi, Pulgate bus stop and Solapur Bazaar, before heading towards Swargate and Sarasbaug. Smashed cars, two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws that had been hit by the bus were strewn all over the route he took.
Mane hails from a village in Solapur and has been attached to the Swargate depot since 2009. He has no home here and lives in the restroom for drivers. Assigned to the Gangapur-Swargate route, on which his native place falls, he had returned late on the night of January 24.
Mane reported back early on Wednesday and requested for an earlier trip than the 10.15 am one he was assigned. When his request was declined by the superior, he simply walked out. Mane’s colleagues at the depot said he looked relaxed at night and had tea alone in the morning. When Mirror visited them, senior police officers were questioning Vijay Gulve, the bus conductor who accompanied Mane on his Gangapur trip the previous day.
Mirror also spoke to senior depot manager Vijay Divate, who has known Mane for three years. “He is an efficient driver and his behaviour is good. I feel he might have just snapped.”
Mane has been arrested and taken into custody by the crime branch. Borwankar maintained he was mentally fit. When specifically asked if Mane was found to be mentally unstable, she snapped: “He is a licensed driver of the ST and was on duty. We are registering a case of murder against him.”
This is a wrong opinion because Talent and good Voice does not depends or comes from a particular religion or country...
Talent is one that is gods gift.

The writer seems do not have even basic knowledge of even which organization started first that are mentioned in this articles. This itself shows whether we can believe this article. I request the author to correct his basics first.
What is the need to organize events of Pakistani singer when relations are not good. It is ideal that sports culture etc. is not politicized and both get promoted everywhere, but you cannot clap with one hand, when other country is hell bent to promote terrorism, circulate fake currency notes, and destroy India then we should not be fool.
the criminals are walking the street and hurting the innocents. The law is very weak, non responsive. Punish the criminals, hang few and send a mesg to the rest. Murderers, rapists, kidnappers and corrupt political goons have taken over the country. No hope what so ever. Pray the girl gets well soon.
I second the opinion expressed by the other comment. If you would have printed photograph of the Mr. Salim (Auto Driver) It would be his medal for honesty and lot of encouraging for others in the same profession.
New Ranip ward is likely to receive Rs 4.96 crore for resurfacing and installing drainage pipelines.Till today nothing is been done. Where is the money gone. Driving on the roads is like taking a roller costar ride. What corporaters are doing i dont know.I can only able to see there faces at the time of election only.
I really appreciate the honest gesture shown by the auto rickshaw driver Mr. Salim Usman Mohammed who came all the way from Kubernagar to Thaltej to return the costlier mobile phone.
In this regard to encourage such more events you should have published the PHOTOGRAPH of Mr. Salim Usman Mohammed other than of MBBS Student. I feel it would be a life time achievement award for him and that would have made him feel more proud as if he had achieved a “Honesty Reward” from Ahmedabad Mirror.

media should cross check and verify facts whether maya kodnani is suffering from any sickness or just playing drama to enjoy life in hospital so that she can meet her family members , all criminals are enjoying their life in hospitals now a days....
Its sad to see something like this happening to someone.
But I would like to say that its very easy to blame the authorities for anything and everything. Yes, she fell because of the pothole which the authorities should've repaired. But did she get the stitches because of that? Not at all. Why wasn't Ms. Prachi wearing a helmet? Had she been wearing one she would've gone away with a few bruises.
When citizens themselves are not bothered about their own life and safety the authorities have no role in that. A good helmet costs around Rs. 1,000.00. Is it worth spending that amount, it sure as hell is.
My opinion is that we should stop blaming the authorities about everything and take responsibilities for our own mis-conduct.
My mother who just arrrived in India has been subjected to very rude behaviour. From customs. Demanding money. She ended up paying .these sort of behaviour. Is criminal. The government. Should do something a out it.
The sports sir certainly has some mental problem, before doing anything, pl get him going to a doctor. They have problems with their family, for which they cannot do anything, so they come to college and try to remove all their remorse on us the student???? Were does their so called Seniority go away??????
