Death stalked the streets of Pune for over 30 minutes on Wednesday morning in the form of a State Transport (ST) bus driven by Santosh Maruti Mane, who left a trail of death and broken limbs not to mention mangled remains of vehicles in the wake of what looks like a fit of unexplained killer rage.
A Honda Activa lies wedged between an autorickshaw and an SUV near Swargate on Wednesday
At last count, 11 were confirmed dead while nearly a dozen others were seriously injured. The city police were still counting the number of injured lying in hospitals across parts of the city.
Mane, 40, a driver with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), randomly “hijacked” a parked bus MH 14 BT 1532 that had arrived minutes ago from Satara at the busy Swargate depot around 8 am before going on the rampage, smashing vehicles and pedestrians during the morning rush hour. At the end of his death drive, he had covered nearly 15 kilometres through busy areas.
Eye witness account
Eyewitnesses recalled the ST bus hurtling down at very high speed and on the wrong side. Wilson Mantode saw grown-ups grabbing and pulling the children to safety from the “psychopath at the wheels”. The bus crushed his Honda Activa parked on the road side. “It was shocking, as if an angel of death had taken over the streets,” he said.
Police commissioner Meeran Borwankar said Mane had smashed the barriers and grazed past a PMPML bus placed by the police in an attempt to stop him. “The police fired ten rounds to deflate the tyres. Citizens came forward and literally threw children from the roads to the safety of the footpaths. He was in such a dangerous mood. The damage was tremendous,” she said.
It was a daring act by Sharif Ibrahim Kutty, a 21-year-old student from Poona College, that brought Mane’s death ride to a halt in Dandekar Bridge area around 8.45 am. Sharif and another youngster, Ashish Khot, chased the bus on their two-wheelers for nearly 10 kilometres from Kasewadi. It was Sharif who got inside the bus and overpowered Mane.
The chase to stop the bus had begun right where it started. Driver Santosh Hendre was the first to notice Mane trying to flee with the bus he had just driven in from Satara. He, along with traffic controller Ajit Limaye, tried to stop him on the bus stop premises, but he sped away hitting autorickshaws and handcarts parked at the out gate, recalled Limaye.
Hendre had alighted from the bus to make an arrival entry on the official register inside Limaye’s cabin. Mane apparently used the master key in his possession to start the bus. The rampage
He initially headed towards Satara Road only to return back to the bus stop, where he mauled a youth to death, and then ploughed the bus into the wrong lane and sped towards Golibar Maidan.
He did several circular rounds on the one-way in the vicinity of Golibar Maidan and then moved on to M G Road, East Street, Kasewadi, Pulgate bus stop and Solapur Bazaar, before heading towards Swargate and Sarasbaug. Smashed cars, two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws that had been hit by the bus were strewn all over the route he took.
Mane hails from a village in Solapur and has been attached to the Swargate depot since 2009. He has no home here and lives in the restroom for drivers. Assigned to the Gangapur-Swargate route, on which his native place falls, he had returned late on the night of January 24.
Mane reported back early on Wednesday and requested for an earlier trip than the 10.15 am one he was assigned. When his request was declined by the superior, he simply walked out. Mane’s colleagues at the depot said he looked relaxed at night and had tea alone in the morning. When Mirror visited them, senior police officers were questioning Vijay Gulve, the bus conductor who accompanied Mane on his Gangapur trip the previous day.
Mirror also spoke to senior depot manager Vijay Divate, who has known Mane for three years. “He is an efficient driver and his behaviour is good. I feel he might have just snapped.”
Mane has been arrested and taken into custody by the crime branch. Borwankar maintained he was mentally fit. When specifically asked if Mane was found to be mentally unstable, she snapped: “He is a licensed driver of the ST and was on duty. We are registering a case of murder against him.”
Mr, Srinivasan may not have been directly connected to this spot/match fixing. It appears that it is a conspiracy to dislodge him from the current position and also to see that MI wins the trophy. It is unfortunate that ultimately he has to taste his own medicine which he brewed to Mr. Modi.
Amjad Ansari, please try to resolve matters in an amicable manner. Please dont use terms like hang Jesus and Mary Idols,Jesus and Mary have got nothing to do with this episode. It is not fair that your community crave and beg to study in Christian institutions then abuse us,we people are very peaceloving and non violent. If we were to utter anything derogatory against your community, you would have massacred us. Did you not read the article where a Christian priest allowed the muslim community in UK to perform namaz inside the church premises as it began raining. Why dont your community study in your own institutions rather than Christian ones,Im sure if a non muslim studied in your institutions they would have to follow your dress code, wont they.So please make this a religious conflict of thoughts and interest.Thank you Amjad and peace be with you and your family.
It is a common practice for British news papers to ask eminent people to contribute their own obituaries. These obits are updated at one year intervals and the latest one is published when the author finally departs. It is indeed novel to invite the obituaries in anticipation of self inflicted deaths!
There are many precedents in our country where religious sensitivities have over-ruled the rules of minority institutions. In a century old Christian college of Kolkatha, a Hindu teacher won a case against his employers, who forbade him from entering a class room without shaving his beard. The teacher suffered a bereavement in the family and had to avoid shaving during the 'soucha' period.
The religious sentiments of Sikhs are respected everywhere and they are not harassed in the matter of beard or the other four symbols of their faith.
The college Principal Kanchana Head mistress Maria are petty, sporting a beard is personal, as Christian Clergy from the Roman Catholic and Church of England denomination sport beards. Why is Zeeshan subjected to this mental trauma. The clergy from the orthodox clergy even sport beards as well.
A different experiment. Yes,when u realise it is your last few hours it makes one think a lot of things and most times it is good thoughts and wishes for dear ones. Like every emotion is impermanent, it will pass too but can help you to remember that our days are decreasing on this planet.
College board and Principal should be booked under National Security acts like Tada, Pota and Threat to national security acts which were used against Varun Gandhi by Medam Mayavati, these schools are anti national cults. Must be nationalised at all levels by dismissing its board.
Do these BBPM employees ever work? They seem to be logging time and earning money without doing any work. I won't be surprised if these free loaders are working elsewhere while drawing salary from the govt.
College refuses beard let the college do their job instead of highlighting it in the front page then aggravating the situation instead of front paging these better find other thing which has to be brought to public notice do not instigate thing in this manner tomorrow the community will ask for driving the vehicles in the right side instead of left since most of the Muslim countries do so is it possible be responsible in reporting things which are sensitive
we need to file the case against the college for discriminatory attitude......Does living sporting the beard is against the secularism? What about hanging Jesus and Mary Idols in schools and colleges pemises? we all know how hypocrite you are.
Mr.Zeeshan if you need any kind of help to talk to hem Please contact me
If the rule existed before this student joined college, then he knew what he signed up for and needs to comply! Rules are rules, else there will be anarchy especially in a country like ours. Please don't sensationalise such issues. The media has responsibilities towards society. You could have got the facts before you published this sensitive issue.
If this rule was made recently then it is unfair .
Wat is with people these days... one wants to wear a turban, one wants to keep a beard, another wants to keep long hair!!! When will people learn tat d reason schools/colleges hav these rules r for uniformity... if u cant adhere to d rules find a college which tolerates all this
Rules of any registered institution in Karnataka can only be over ruled by Karnataka State rules/regulations or by Union of India Rules. The only recourse to Janab Zeeshan is to approach the Law Courts in Karnataka/Indian Union.Demonstration etc by the community is not the answer.Jai Laws of the Land.
Did not Jesus Christ, who Christains worship, had a beard. Then why do these christains get upset when muslims sport a beard. Also, when all the hindu sages and gurus too sport a beard, why do a few hindus also get upset when they see a muslim sporting a beard. Hypocrites all of them. Shame on them.

I congratulate Rohan for the work he has committed himself to. I would also like to draw attention towards another resource, India's biggest self-publishing and print-on-demand web portal Pothi.com where many translations of Indian classics are already available. For example, right now they are featuring the title, "Select Translations of Rabindranath Tagore: Volume I" for the fourth consecutive day on their homepage http://pothi.com. One can in fact preview the first section of the book, the complete story, Finally by Rabindranath Tagore free of cost by clicking the PREVIEW button on http://is.gd/tagore1 which is just a shortcut URL to the book's page. Don't let this chance pass, because the best things in life are free!
