Four citizens have objected to the orientation of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj being set up in the National Defence Academy (NDA) and have demanded that it should be set up such that it faces the main road.

Nitin Keskar, Nandkishor Ekbote, Suhas Pasalkar and Shantaram Pingale said that the statue is set up at a central location in the NDA. But its orientation is such that the main road, Trishul Marg is behind it, and so, visitors entering the campus see only the back of the statue.

The Shivaji statue should face north, citizens say

The citizens raised the issue in a press conference on Tuesday. “There are still a few days to go before the statue is unveiled. There is enough time to make sure the statue faces the right way,” Keskar said.

Additional municipal commissioner Naresh Zurmure told Mirror that the PMC has provided funding for the statue but it is the NDA authorities who have taken the decision on its placement

Former chairman of PMC’s standing committee Sham Deshpande, who had taken the initiative to install the statue in NDA said of other national heroes in NDA, but none of Shivaji Maharaj. Minor details like placement should not be an issue now.”
