Vijay Deshmukh of the Shiv Sena and Priya Gadade of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are in for failing to provide information. While Deshmukh has allegedly given wrong information pertaining to registered crimes against him in his affidavit for the candidacy, Gadade has been accused of giving a fake birth certificate to be eligible to contest the municipal elections.
Pravin Ashtikar, election officer of PMC, said, “We have initiated inquiries against both the corporators after we receiving complaints against them. Based on prima facie evidence, we were convinced about the complaints. We have also asked the police to provide criminal records of Deshmukh, if any. If it is found that he had hidden his criminal background, it will result in a criminal offence against him.”
Gadade, who was elected from Janata Vasahat in Parvati, was touted to be the youngest corporator at 21, which was the minimum age required to contest the elections. PMC’s health department has filed an FIR against unidentified persons for forging her birth certificate that showed her date of birth as October 8, 1990, on which she contested the polls.
Ashtikar said that the PMC has solicited an opinion from the legal department to take action against Gadade.
Besides these two, Pradeep Gaikwad, corporator from Ramabai Ambedkar Road, will face a criminal case for filing wrong information in his election affidavit. The officials have found that he has mentioned the number of children he has as two while he has three children, which would have disqualified him from the contest.
Another corporator, Kalpana Bahirat of MNS from Mangalwar Peth, will also face action for furnishing a fake caste certificate. Bahirat had given her caste certificate of Kunbi Maratha, but the officials found that no such certificate was issued with that serial no. “The procedure has begun to file criminal cases against them,” Ashtikar said.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Dattatray Khade who was elected from the Deccan Gymkhana ward in February had been disqualified in 2009 during his last term because he was convicted for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was subsequently acquitted by the Bombay High Court, but could not re-enter the house.
