Racketeers earned Rs 4-5,000 a day

Yerwada police came down heavily on youth running an illegal parking facility on a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) road near Yerwada Central Prison.

Around six youth were rounded up and civic authorities are expected to lodge a complaint against them for illegally running the business on PMC property.

For more than a month, citizens visiting Jail Road were fleeced by this group from nearby slums. Attempts to resist or refuse to pay the illegal charges proved dangerous.

The group had occupied the Sangamwadi-Airport Road, which is under construction.

PMC maintains that no pay and park contract was issued and the youth were doing business illegally.

The group used to charge Rs 2 per hour for a two-wheeler and Rs 5-10 for fourwheelers without issuing receipts. They earned between Rs 4-5,000 a day.
