Year after Maval firing, villagers pay homage to those killed

Pune-Mumbai Expressway blocked for a few minutes

Amid heavy police deployment, villagers paid their homage to the three victims of Maval firing at Baur village on Thursday. The Pune rural police had imposed a ban on any kind of unlawful assembly in the entire Maval taluka. Despite this, people gathered in large numbers on the first anniversary of the firing incident.

The Pune -Mumbai Expressway was blocked for a few minutes to mark the occasion. Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe, BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari and MLA Bala Bhegde attended the ceremony.

The farmers have demanded the report of the inquiry commission be made public within 15 days. They also demanded the withdrawal of cases filed against farmers involved in the agitation last year.

The concerned police officers should be charged with culpable homicide, the relatives of the victims be given a job in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation were among the other demands.

The farmers also resolved to continue their fight till the Pavana pipeline project is junked completely. Three farmers, including a woman, were killed in police firing near Baur village on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on August 9, 2011. The farmers had held a rally against the acquisition of their land for a water pipeline project.
