Members of the Swabhiman Sanghatna distributed helmets ahead of Friday

While Dahi Handi festivities mandate a skillful fine balance for those celebrating, as they climb atop human pyramids, this time failing to do so isn’t as dangerous as usual.

The city unit of the Swabhiman Sanghatna will distribute 2,000 bicycle helmets to such ‘govindas’ on Friday to ensure that a fall won’t be as dangerous as usual. Spokesperson of the Swabhimani Sanghatana, Abhijeet Waghchoure, said, “We want to celebrate the festival in a big way, but avoid mishaps.”

Last year, a boy was badly injured when he was fell from a Dahi Handi pyramid in Thane and later died. “At least 15 youth received head injuries last year after falling off pyramids,” added Waghchoure.

Rajesh Ghume, president of the Shivtej Group who also celebrates Dahi Handi, said, “This is a great initiative. Besides encouraging safety equipment, we will also cover all our boys with a one day insurance, in case of any injury during celebrations.”
