Members of the Opposition hold up slogans against NCP while NGOs protest outside the PMC building

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally decided to reconsider the proposal to privatise the Kondhwa abattoir. The decision was taken at the General Body (GB) meeting on Friday afternoon after strong protests by NGOs.

On Tuesday, the long-pending decision to hand the running of the Kondwa slaughterhouse over to a private agency was approved in a Standing Committee meeting despite rampant opposition from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

After this, members of the Matrabhumi Dakshata Chalwal, an NGO from Pane started a fast unto death near the front gate of the PMC building in protest. Various Jain organisations, ISKCON, the Sadhu Vaswani Mission and other Hindu organisations joined the agitation as well.

The protests continued during Friday’s GB meeting as well with different organisations started agitating in front of the building. Meanwhile, BJP and Shiv Sena corporators condemned the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) by shouting slogans.

The meeting was held up for almost an hour by opposition parties. Finally, Subhas Jagtap, NCP’s Leader of House said that the proposal would be reconsidered and a decision taken afterwards.

There are already major differences between the NCP and Congress corporators over the issue of privatisation with Congress corporator Abhay Chhajed and Aba Bagul and NCP’s school board member Laxmikant Khabiya showing individual support to the Matrabhumi Dakshata Chalwal agitation and fast.
