Scenes from Resistance: Burning Skies

The Play Station Vita was made for first person shooters. Or so we’d like to believe since it does possess the right number of buttons and the all important dual analogue sticks to making running and gunning fun.

Burning Skies takes place in the early days of earth’s invasion by the series iconic villains, the Chimera. You’re Tom Riley, a fireman who decides to take the fight to the enemy after they abduct his family.

It ends up being a hackneyed attempt at piecing together an emotional plot. But it allows the developers to focus on what’s important, namely the weapons.

As is trademark for the franchise, there’s a strong focus on some unique guns. These include the series staples such as the Bullseye and Auger which feature alternate fire modes via tapping the screen.

It’s a novel method that is easy to use in conjunction with the rest of the game’s controls that make driving off the invaders a breeze. The game is designed with some distinctly old school choices such as being able to carry every weapon you find and forcing you into rooms where you have to kill each enemy to progress. It’s a sweet deviation from most current-gen first-person shooter design that limits your weapons and allows you to run past enemies.

When you’re done with the game’s entertaining albeit short story mode (around 6-7 hours), there’s multiplayer too. With three modes and a small number of maps to choose from, it’s sufficient enough to squeeze more than just a few hours of fun at a rather hefty price, which brings us to the final point.

The price does it no favours. To put it into perspective, there are PS3 games that are cheaper and a few Vita games too.

All said and done, Burning Skies is a slick shooter that would make a great addition to your fledgling Vita collection. Just not at the current price point. Grab this at a discount.
