Screengrabs from Babel Rising
Tower defence games are horrible with a controller. They require a level of positional accuracy that’s hard to achieve with a controller. This is the reason most tower defence games work out better on touch devices like the iPad.

Babel Rising uses that formula and gets you playing an angry god who’s keen on delivering punishment to his defying followers, who are on a mission to build a tower that can reach the heavens. It’s a weak justification to kill thousands of labourers, but whatever gets the game started, right?

Initially the game is simple enough to pick up and very enjoyable as yo will be dominating the levels with your powers. You have the option to select two out of the four available elements – earth, fire, water and wind; each with their own sets of three attacks.

Water lets you create rain, a snow storm, and as an ultimate attack, lets you create a flood to take out all the followers at one shot. The coolest of the powers is undeniably the fire element that gives you the ability to throw fireballs, create a firewall and cause a super-destructive meteor shower. It’s all fun, in the start at least.

The problems start when the game creates multiple paths for the followers, and it’s not because of the challenge, but the controls.

You will need to constantly swivel the camera around the tower to be able to stop the inflow of workers. Things gets infuriating quickly with a controller, but if you’re using a Kinect, you might as well stop trying, the controls are all over the place.

It’s clear that Babel Rising is made for a traditional point and click interface, which is why I would advise you to try it on the PC or iPad instead of the consoles.
