Every frame in the fairy world of haute couture is replete with glamour and beauty; every person is a perfect specimen of our race, possessing flawless skin, perfection in their pout, arched eyebrows and ever-so-thick eyelashes.

Clothes seem to be made of gossamer — ever so luscious, delicate yet opulent, seem to be stitched on the body. Thus unrolls the red carpet of the Golden Globe Awards 2012. The awards celebrate the talent from the field of television and the motion pictures, thereby making it a ceremony of great magnitude.

Like a moth, we are captivated by the decadent soiree of absolutely the best that the world of fashion has to offer.
Nainika: Designer
The Golden Globes and the Oscars are a very big deal as these are watched all over and generate a worldwide interest. The participants are from the glamour industry and are backed by the very top-notch talent of stylists, make-up artistes, designers, dermatologists, accessory designers and jewellers.
What is worn here, in many ways impacts fashion choices all over the world and key elements or cuts or colour is picked up by the high street brands and eventually reaches all of us. The actors are, of course, vying for a look that would elevate them to the title of iconic.
My pick: I liked Frieda Pinto in Prada gown. Prada is not associated with haute couture per se and her choice is refreshing, providing her with understated elegance.
Sohiny Das: Fashion writer and stylist
The Golden Globes are a relatively recent entry into the Indian mind frame, which was attuned to the Oscars at best. It is a highly planned marketing extravaganza backed by the mammoth design houses, public relation firms, stylists and publicists.
Reportage in all media forms brings these red-carpet looks to people who do not refer to glossies for their fashion feeds. Rather than attempting to be ‘edgy’ or making a statement, I feel the focus should simply be ‘looking good’.
That is what works best. Ever since Aishwarya Rai’s first Cannes appearance piqued the Indian interest, we have been in the process of finding our own red carpet sensibilities. Mixed results so far, but we are getting there.
Nachiket Barve: Designer
The looks that worked me are the ones that were not caught in the ‘safe rut’ and took some fashion risks; a balance of individuality and event appropriate style rather than one put together by ‘certain A list’ designer.
Of course, the right hair, make-up and attitude plays a vital part. The red carpet at the 69th Annual Golden Globe clearly indicates that ‘classic’ is the trend and the dark, gothic days are over; these looks will stay with us over time.
My pick: Emma Stone in Lanvin, Claire Danes in J Mendel and Jessica Alba in Gucci.
Clint Fernandes: Make-up artiste
I just loved the return of the old Hollywood glamour at the ceremony. The focus is on the skin, which is dewy, glowing and flawless. Angelina Jolie in her Atelier Versace gown and how her makeup accentuated her dress just took my breath away.
Also loved Madonna (Reem Arca) and Lea Michele (Marchesa) who seems to possess an evolved sense of style that belies her age. Hair updos and head accessories seem to have found favour with the glam set here. So ladies, to attain these looks, please take care of your skin and remember, in make-up, less is always more.
My pick: Angelina Jolie in her Atelier Versace gown, Madonna in Reem Arca and Lea Michele in Marchesa.
As the arc lights dim — we are left with the compelling image of the Star, the precious find of the ceremony – Octavia Spencer – the winner of best supporting actress title. She wore a relatively unknown designer — Tadashi Shoji’s creation; make-up that was apparently all wrong; as was her hair, but all that melted away into oblivion by her dazzling performance in The Help and with her moving speech. Some stars just have it in them to be that — stars.
