Killer encephalitis claims 88 in UP in fortnight; govt hits panic button

Eighty - eight people have succumbed to various strains of encephal it is over the last fortnight in Uttar Pradesh, prompting the state government to hit the panic button.

The disease that hits the state every year and kills a large number of children has taken health officials by surprise this time due to its timing–amonthin advance of the 'disease period' that usually begins in July. 

Health officials admitted that till June 10, as many as 467 cases of a cute encephalitis syndrome had been reported in the state. 

The disease claimed more than 600 lives in the last season.

Nine more deaths in Bihar; Toll 159

In Bihar, nine children have died of acute encephalitis syndrome in the last three weeks, taking the state's toll from the disease to 159, officials said on Saturday.
