The bodies of six infants and four adults were found on the banks of a lake in Mahbubnagar, about 100 kilometres from Hyderabad, on Friday. Human body parts were also recovered from the spot, due to which the district administration believes that the bodies may have been dumped in the lake after being used as cadavers in medical laboratories.
Passersby first noticed the body of an infant washed up on the banks of Pedda Cheruvu at around 9 in the morning and alerted the police. Since the recovered bodies were badly decomposed, the police said it was difficult to identify them immediately. Out of the infant bodies recovered, two were female and four were male.
The District medical and health officer, P Sanjeeva Reddy, who inspected the area, also hinted at the possibility of retrieving more bodies from the lake. “It appears that the bodies were used in laboratory experiments. But, we cannot confirm this at the moment,” he said. Meanwhile, the police questioned doctors from hospitals in the area to find out if the infants whose bodies were recovered were victims of infanticide.
Civil supplies minister DK Aruna, who hails from the district, said she had directed the district collector to personally monitor the investigation and find the culprits.
