Mumbai: A doctor and a nurse at a government- run primary health centre in Virar, Mumbai have come under the scanner after a 20-year-old pregnant woman died after developing complications during delivery. The civic body’s maternal death committee is probing the death case.

Unnati Gurav, who delivered a healthy girl on June 22, died on Saturday. Unnati’s family alleged there was no gynaecologist during her delivery, and although there was a power failure at the health centre, the nursing staff did not think it necessary to use apower generator.

“When Unnati went into labour, a couple of MBBS students and a midwife were around but no senior doctor was present,” said Unnati’s younger sister Preeti.

“The midwife told us my sister was having twins, and though we informed her that reports had not indicated twins, she refused to listen,” said Preeti.

“They pulled out the placenta with force. Unnati delivered a three-kg healthy baby, and then her condition worsened. Her uterus was coming out she started bleeding, but staff told us it was common.

Later, they said we should take her to a bigger hospital with better facilities.” Unnati died on Saturday evening at Sion Hospital, eight days after she was admitted. “Due to severe blood loss, her kidney and liver were badly affected,” said, a doctor there.

“Unnati died due to uterine inversion and massive bleeding.” In-charge of the Virar primary health centre Dr Swati Parab said her junior Dr Sharad Gaikwad had conducted the delivery, adding that there was no reason for the doctor to assume Unnati was carrying twins since the sonography report did not indicate it. “It’s a case of gross negligence.

We have issued a memo to the nurse in-charge, Shabnam Khan, who did not switch on the generator,” said Dr Parab. “Once Dr Gaikwad resumes duty, we will take down his statement and conduct a thorough probe into the incident.”
