A t the peak of his career, he would be mobbed by fans, especially women, who even carried photographs of the actor with them. In this picture captured by ace lensman Jagdish Aurangabadkar on the sets of Manmohan Desai’s 1974 film Roti, the man often referred to as the first superstar of Hindi cinema is seen sharing a light moment with actress Mumtaz and Om Prakash.

Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz made for a wonderful pair and acted alongside each other in eight hit films. Not only did they set the screen on fire with their sizzling chemistry, rumour had it the two were involved off-screen as well.

What added fuel to all the speculation was the fact that barely a year after Khanna’s sudden marriage in 1973 to the up and coming Dimple Kapadia, who was only 16 at the time, Mumtaz decided to tie the knot with business tycoon Mayur Madhwani in 1974.

Apparently, Roti was one of the three films Mumtaz was doing with Khanna around this time. Buzz is the actress, who got along very well with the superstar, even pulling his leg on many an occasion, especially about his female fan following, was devastated to hear about his marriage to Dimple.

She decided to complete all three films before packing her bags and leaving India and Bollywood for good. Supposedly, Khanna too was rather lost when she quit films. Though the actress never said it in so many words, reportedly she had even hinted at a big fallout between her and the Hindi film industry before quitting.
