  Rock of ages

Synopsis:  This feature film adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages is directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray). Set in Los Angeles of the late eighties, Rock of Ages is about the rock ‘n’ roll romance between Julianne Hough’s small-town girl Sherrie Christian and Diego Boneta’s city boy Drew Boley as the duo meet for the first time on Sunset Strip while chasing their Hollywood dreams.

The love story is told through the heart-pounding hits of bands like Def Leppard, Poison, Twisted Sister and more. The film also stars Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J Blige and Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx.

History tells us that watching an unlikely ensemble cast brought low by ox-like vocals and poor choreography can make for a diverting trip to the cinema, and Rock of Ages would very much like to be seen as a hairier version of Mamma Mia.

But while that film simply let the audience to draw their own conclusions, Shankman cravenly hedges his bets, and his tone wavers wildly between ironic and reverential.
