To celebrate motherhood, Aditi Khatau and Ashwini Khandelwal carried out the fun switch with the 17-year old Ashwini mothering her mom Aditi for just a day, and Aditi getting thoroughly pampered playing the daughter for once!

“I really liked being in my daughter’s shoes,’ laughs Aditi Khatau, the brain behind the Dial-a-Meal service, which has made every Puneite run for hot home-delivered lunches and dinners. “I stayed in bed late.
My tea and breakfast was brought to me. My lunch was prepared. I read a book all afternoon and didn’t have to go to work today like usually I have to even on a holiday,” gloats a happy Aditi.
“It was a complete day of relaxation for me. As a part of the switch, the only ‘work’ I did, which wasn’t really ‘work’, was taking Ebony — my daschund — out for a walk, which is something that Ashwini does everyday,” she adds.
“The rest of the time I was reading a book, taking naps and went out with my friends in the evening,” says Aditi.
17-year-old Ashwini, Aditi’s daughter, took her mother’s place efficiently for day. It was tough to understand whether they were mother-daughter, sisters or best friends.
Probably an amalgamation of all. Ashwini, a mature and highly responsible girl for her age, seemed to be mothering her mother.
“She doesn’t mother me. She mother-in-laws me,” exclaims Aditi. Looking at their truly special relationship and them poking fun at each other was refreshing to watch.
Aditi, being a single parent and bringing her daughter up all by herself is probably one of the many reasons for this beautiful bond.
Another could be that they just totally enjoy each other’s company. “Being a single parent, I had to play good cop and bad cop, which was a bit tough,” smiles Aditi.
Ashwini, an aspiring environmental engineer says, “I have already started helping out at Dial-a-meal, except this time I went there on a holiday, which usually my mom does.
The switch was so much fun. I could reprimand her, which is something she usually does, though preparing tea, breakfast and lunch wasn’t that great!” she grimaces.
Just being the two of them, Ashwini and Aditi share a close relationship, and are each other’s support system.
Aditi recalls, “Many years back, my mother was scolding me for something and Ashwini couldn’t say anything to her, so she put her hands on my ears so that I wouldn’t hear the scolding.” Such is their protective love!
Conscious of the environment situation, Ashwini, prefers to commute by bus, unlike many of her generation.
“I think it’s not just cool, it’s an urgency — which we simply don’t realise!”she says wisely. The girl is wise in other matters too. She recently hosted her mom’s birthday completley by herself.
“From the food, to the music I love and even interacting with the guests, she did everything. No adult could have done better,” says Aditi fondly.
Through all this display of affection, the funky side of their relationship was more than visible as they took constant jibes at each other. Here’s to girl power, women and above all mothers! They make our world beautiful.
