You rarely come across paintings on birds, but surprisingly feathered creatures have fascinated Manisha Padhye for two decades. A popular subject in Europe and now the US, only few artists from the country pursue the art of capturing birds in their natural habitat.

“Whenever I see a bird, I generally start by sketching it using pencils. I feel this is the closest you can get to representing them. However, I avoid using a camera because colours of its feathers tend to change due to the play of light,” says Manisha. The artist has always been an outdoor person.

“My family and friends also love nature. I also like to go out on trekking and usually while I am on these trips, I tend to paint,” adds Manisha. Her paintings, mostly done using water and oil colours look exactly like the feathered creatures.

“Now that I have been painting birds for so long, I can immediately do a quick painting if I see a bird outside my window and you can find them everywhere, you just have to look,” says Manisha. In 2010, Manisha was invited to participate in a prestigious exhibition in the US titled Birds In Art.

“My painting of a flycatcher bird was selected by the organisers,” says Manisha. Noteworthy is how she has taught herself art by studying the works of art masters. There are also quite a number of people who are interested in her art. “I get a lot of online enquiries for my paintings,” says Manisha. Catch her paintings at Bliss Art Gallery, Koregoan Park, starting from today.
