There was one day meant to save the earth. Global warming, unnatural disasters and oil spills made people feel guilty occasionally. So guilty, that when something went wrong, they blamed it on themselves.

Themselves as a whole — people. People should stop using up natural resources at such a fast pace and people should find alternative sources of energy, they said while getting excited every time a European-made car drove past (they were now sold down the road from where they lived, they said while trying to identify model numbers) and rejoicing that their city would truly be comparable with the rest of the world once the metro was in place.

Part of the solution, they felt was awareness. And even though most were aware by this time, sending out more messages couldn’t in any way worsen the situation.

So, a day was dedicated to the earth. And across the world, people spent time to be more earth friendly,  They conducted drives, went out and planted trees, coloured the newspaper green and cycled across the city in large groups, feeling even more connected with the other riders than usual – they were, after all, part of the same cause now.
