Ten-year-old Rajvardhan Patil, a student of Loyola High School in Pashan, has a unique hobby. He makes friends with birds and photographs them.

His house in Shivajinagar, one of the most urbanised parts of the city has a different story to tell. There is a thick cover of greenery comprising of various plants.

Taking advantage of the environment, Patil started feeding birds like crows, which in turn attracted birds like hornbills, cuckoos, eagles, sparrows, bulbuls and  pigeons

Padmashree is a proud mother as she explains that she has always believed in motivating her son to take up hobbies of his choice. “He is naturally inclined towards nature, especially birds and insects.

For the past two years, since we have been staying in this area, we have been witness to several rare birds. He religiously feeds them chapatis, biscuits and home-made food. I make sure that the birds are never given leftover food,” she said.

Rajvardhan himself told Mirror that, as there is no television in their house, his main source of entertainment comes from nature where the birds are his best friends “I genuinely feel for them and have many questions about their lives,” he said.

Though Rajvardhan’s school authorities are supportive, he feels that teachers should take students to the neighbouring hill and introduce them to the wonders of nature.
