Fraudsters make clone of ATM card, siphon off lakhs from account

The manager of Connections Systems in Aundh has lodged a complaint with the Chaturshrungi police station alleging that he was duped to the tune of Rs 7, 17, 677 by a conman who had used his ICICI bank account. Jitendra Gopal Kanitkar (39), a resident of Paud Road said in his first in-formation report (FIR), that his company deposits his salary in his ICICI bank account and he often accesses the account with his ATM card. “The last time I withdrew money was on December 31 and the amount was Rs 5000. The balance left in my account then was Rs 7,27,515. I had then gone on a holiday on January 1 along with my family outside Pune. Between January 1 and January 5, I did not use my ATM card; didn’t withdraw any money, nor made any transactions. But, on January 5, when I tried to access my account using my password, it would not open. After failing to open it for the fifth time, I called the ICICI call centre, where the executive said that my account had been blocked and asked me operate it the following day. So, I tried accessing it the next day, but could not log in. I complained to the ICICI call centre employees again, who asked me to opt for a new password. I became suspicious and asked them to moniter my account transactions,” Kanitkar states in his FIR. “After that, on January 10, I received a new password through Velocity Courier Services. On January 12, I tried to log in using the new password and failed yet again. When I made enquiries about my balance with the call centre employees, they said that transactions worth Rs 7,17,677 were made from my ICICI account. I was shocked to hear that, since I had not used my ATM card for any transaction after December 31. I then spoke to the bank manager and checked the details of the transaction. The record showed that some fraudster has made purchases from Pantaloons and other shops using my ATM card. I then lodged a complaint with the po-lice,” Kanitkar said. “We have not yet got any clues about the fraudster. The investigation is on. It seems that the fraudsters have made a clone of the ATM card and used it to purchase clothes and electronic equipment from different malls. We are also trying to get CCTV images to find out who all used the ATM machine after Kanitkar withdrew money for the last time,” said sub in-spector S A S Sayyed, who is investigating the case. |
