Although the Regional Transport Office is issuing driving licence in a smart card format, they do not have the machinery to read these cards.

Now C G Sangitrao, Chief Secretary, transport, has announced that soon all the RTOs will be getting hand-held readers by which they will be able to check the authenticity of the driving licences.

Earlier, people used to get driving licences on paper, but nearly five years back RTO started issuing licences in the smart card form.

But since there was no machinery which could read these smart cards, there were of no more use than just a normal licence.

But soon, the RTOs all over the state will be getting a machinery called hand held readers. The government has decided to give nearly 1,200 readers to all the RTOs and police.

C G Sangitrao, was here in the city for a visit to the Pune RTO. During his visit, Sangitrao made this announcement. He said, “The driving licence is a very important document as it can be used for a residential proof or for photo identity.

Although these licences are now issued in a smart card form, fake licences can also be made in the market. It can cause a serious security concern. That is the reason we have now decided to give hand-held readers to all the RTOs and police free of cost.”

Sangitrao said, “A chip is installed in these smart cards. All the details of the licence holders are available on this chip.

A software is being developed which reads all the information available on that chip. Although a fake licence can be made but to fake a chip is near impossible. If it is made and used, it can be traced.  For security purposes, these hand-held readers will play an important role.”
