According to the research, 25% of English-medium school going children were found to be over weight, while 10% of school children in general were obese. Interestingly, the percentage of obesity in regional language schools were found to be less than 5%. “It has been seen that prevalence of childhood obesity have increased in recent times around the world and in India. We have done several studies on childhood obesity from our research institute Hirabi Cowsji Jehangir Medical Research Institute at Jehangir hospital, Pune.” He explained, “Our studies, published in Index medical journals, show that childhood obesity in Pune city is high and is rising at an alarming rate,”informed Dr Vaman Khadilkar, principal researcher and pediatric endocronologist at Jehangir hospital, who conducted the research with his wife, Dr Anuradha Khadilkar. Obesity was found to be the highest in the more affluent schools, followed by Marathi medium schools, while it was very low in corporation-run schools. The figures indicate that it is all about money, after all. Sedentary lifestyle, very little activity in terms of games and sports, excessive TV viewing, hence, too much exposure, wrong food choices, lack of exercises by way of having the luxury of cars to go to school etc are some of the disadvantages working against children in affluent schools. Dr Khadilkar informed that in their national study for 2008, obesity had shown an increase among children from affluent families throughout the country. Over the last two decades, the average weight of a boy and girl at 18 years has gone up by 12 kgs! |
