Amount of water used for dousing the Urali garbage depot fire!

To stop the fire, the city’s fire brigade had to use over a massive four crore litres (4,27, 50,000 litres) of water. The water was fetched from the canal in Hadapsar. Fire brigade personnel worked continuously, in three shifts. In one shift, 100 tankers were used. One tanker holds around 10,000 litre of water. A minimum of 25 firemen were on the job daily. The carrying capacity of the Urali garbage depot was over in 2003. However, the PMC didn’t take note of this and continued dumping garbage here. If one adds up the frequent fires here, the loss of water turns out to be huge and bodes badly for future generations. If the PMC had taken note of this and found an alternative, the fire would not take so long to control. Also, the water wasted for the purpose is huge though it isn’t going to effect the city now. The fact is, a precious natural resource has been wasted because of the PMC’s apathy. Presently, one thousand tonnes of garbage is still dumped here. While the average citizen is oblivious about it, Urali villagers have protesting against it for the last six years. However, no one has paid attention to their demands. The scenario got so bad that the villagers stopped garbage vehicles of PMC for two days. This resulted in about three tonnes of garbage lying on various roads of the city. The PMC set up this depot in 1989 around the hill between Urali and Phursungi, spread over 120 acres. Dattatry Nagalkar,Deputy fire officer said, “We worked day and night for a month and a half. This time the fire was really huge.” |
