They are most probably the largest community in the city, and are now feeling the need to network. College students have started getting together to interact and share their experiences while organising events, campus updates, corporate outreach and placement options. About 20 college representatives attended an initiation meeting organised at the College of Engineering Pune (COEP). Representatives were mostly from management and engineering colleges of the city. Although it was an informal meet, the discussion about building a formal network of college students was confirmed. The network will be called Pune Student Council and it will try and cover each college of the city. The college representatives, cultural secretaries and general secretaries of various colleges attended the first meet. “Although the initiative to build such network has been taken by COEP, the council will not be limited to only students with technical backgrounds,” Gantavya Sharma of COEP said. For the very first meeting concluded on September 26, representatives of traditional degree colleges such as Fergusson College , Modern College and DES Law College were invited. Kshitija Deshmukh, the general secretary of Cummins College of Engineering said, “Networking is important because it will help us get updates about latest on-campus developments. When our college organises any event, we have to go to other colleges to publicise it. But, if a network like this is in place, it will be easier for us.” Manish Balwadkar, the general secretary of Fergusson College said, “When we participate in any competition outside Pune like IIT Mood Indigo or Tech fests, we are not even aware about the other Pune teams participating. It will help, if we network among ourselves.” Gantavya Sharma of COEP, “By networking we can avoid a clash in event dates and will be able to exchange information of various groups and fests. Initially, we have started virtual networking. We have already started a community called Pune Student Council on Facebook and Orkut.” The council will work in social, cultural, sports and technical event organisation by exchanging information. |
