Beginning their expedition on October 7, they reached the peak on October 18 and touched base on October 22. Mera Peak is 6,674 metres high, which is approximately 22,000 feet. Samir said, “It is the first adventure of my life. I was inspired by Sauraj to do this as he an adventure freak himself.” Sauraj said, “My father is an armyman and having grown up with a defence background, I developed a liking for adventures. Samir’s interest in adventures and his being my college friend prompted me to take him as my companion.” “We were both carrying 15 kgs of weight each. We used to walk for 10 hours and then rest in small villages there. Almost all the people on the expedition were foreigners,” said Sauraj. Talking about his most scary moment on the expedition, Sauraj said, “While climbing the rocks at 4,000 metres, I hurt my knee very badly. We were also told that climbing is going to be at its worst later on. At that point, I had made my mind to return. But Samir kept motivating me right till the end.” Samir said, “We were on snow for two to three days. It is really difficult to walk on snow as it is very soft and you have to inch your way forward. We had snow till our thighs. All I wanted at that time was to be at home, eating good food and being with my sweetheart. At this point, I decided to get back, but didn’t.” Samir added, “What motivated us the most to reach the summit was the moment when five soldiers from the British Army turned back due to anti-mountain sickness (AMS). They were a team of 10 and five of them quit. We were feeling proud of ourselves to have made it to the summit.” Samir and Sauraj were both working as human resource professionals before leaving their jobs to start a life of adventure. They said, “We were disgusted with our jobs as there was nothing adventurous about it. So we decided to quit and start this. It has been six months now. We have started our own adventure company, which is in its initial stages. Here, we organise adventure camps with school and college students.” |
