Residents clip wings of bird thieves

The two accused, who used to steal for pocket money, are sons of cops!

Birds of a feather get caught together. This is what happened to two bird thieves in Narayan Peth on Sunday night.

The two arrested accused, who are also sons of cops, have been identified as Abhishek Ashok Randive (19), and Nikhil Rajendra Gaikwad (19).

Both of them stay in Shivajinagar police lines and were caught while trying to flee with some birds from a bird and fish outlet.

Talking to Pune Mirror, Amay Joshi, owner of the shop Ugam, said, “I was not present in the shop at the time of the incident.

My assistant Vipul and my friend Sunny were there, along with a few customers. At 8.30 pm, two youths on a motorbike stopped in front of the shop.

While Nikhil waited on the bike, Abhishek went in pretending to be a customer and asked Vipul to show him some cockatiel birds. He selected six cockatiels and then to divert Vipul’s attention, asked him to show some fish.

Vipul went inside to get the fish, asking Sunny to keep an eye on the boys. But Abhishek took everybody by surprise when he suddenly jumped on the bike with the bird cage without paying the money and tried to flee.”

Joshi added, “But Sunny and Vipul immediately started chasing them. They also shouted out for help and grabbed the backseat rest of the motorbike.

As a result, the duo fell down from the motorcycle and the people present there caught them and the police were called in.”

Inspector Moti Chand Rathod, in charge of Vishrambaug police station, said, “We have arrested the two youths under Sections 379 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.

Abhishek is the son of a police sub-inspector and Nikhil’s father is a head constable. They said they used to commit thefts to provide for their pocket money, but we are probing into the matter.”

Rathod went on to add, “Talks with the shop owner and owners of some other shops in the same locality revealed that they had stolen birds in the past also.

In fact, they committed their first theft wearing handkerchiefs as the swine flu scare was on in the city that time, because of which their identities could not be ascertained. Investigations are on.”
