While Christians in the city celebrated All Souls Day on Monday, for those gathered to pay their respects to deceased members of their families at the Dehu Road cemetery a horrid experience was in store. A partially decomposed body was found in the area. The people claim that illegal practices are being carried out in the cemetery due to the lack of security at the graveyard and negligence of the Cantonment Board authorities. People who visited the gravesites of their loved ones feel that the cemetery needs to be protected from gamblers and addicts who encroach on the property of the graveyard. The Dehu Road police, however, claim that there is no suspicious activity taking place in the cemetery. They said that sometimes dogs drag bodies from the Hindu crematorium located near the cemetery. They also claimed that looking after the safety of the cemetery is the job of the Cantonment authorities. Sajan John Thariyan from Dehu Road alleged that the police and Cantonment administration have been neglecting the cemetery and the community has been facing a lot of problems as a result. “Dehu Road has over 25 churches and people bury their deceased relatives here, but the condition of the cemetery is pathetic. The decomposed body lying near the cemetery has raised a number of questions as it could be the work of some criminals. The cemetery is surrounded by illegal businesses such as gambling and is a popular spot for drug addicts. There is no proper compound wall, nor have proper gates been installed. Due to the lack of security guards it has became a haven for criminals,” he said. “After sunset, the area becomes deserted. The authorities are neglecting this community as compared to other communities and they should pay proper attention to this problem,” he added. Inspector in-charge of Dehu Road police station, Nitin Gokake, denied the possibility of anything mysterious in the incident of the decomposed body being found near the cemetery. He said that nobody had lodged a formal complaint saying that the incident was unusual. “There is a Hindu crematorium near the cemetery and sometimes stray dogs drag the half-burnt bodies from the open crematorium in the night. The issue of the lack of security in the cemetery comes under the jurisdiction of the Cantonment authorities; though we have been patrolling the area regularly. I will look into the matter if there is anything illegal going on inside the cemetery,” he added. |
