One dairy down, 22 more to go
FDA cancelled L V Dairy’s licence for supplying adulterated milk. Cops can’t reveal other names due to their ‘political connections’

After a two-month investigation, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cancelled the licence of L V dairy situated in Patas, Daund, 40 km from Pune. This is the first step taken by FDA on any dairy in case of milk adulteration in Pune. Police raided L V Dairy and seized a tanker with a capacity of 20,000 litres. They also seized material worth Rs 96 lakh, used for adulteration. Cops also conducted raids in Shriur and arrested Mangesh Doshi, owner of L V Dairy, with six others. The dairy collected 17,000 litres of milk, but sold 22,000 litres of milk daily. Chemicals were used to increase the quantity of milk by 4,000 litres each day. To maintain the fat ratio, the owner used milk powder. This was done because FDA inspectors use traditional parameters like fat content to test milk. The dairy sold its milk under the brand name ‘Pooja’. Even after the dairy being sealed, milk was sold under a different brand name. In mid-September, after a tip off, Bahusahab Aandhalkar, senior police inspector, raided a dairy at midnight and seized the material. FDA officials collected samples of milk and sent them to the state health lab. In the first week of November, the lab reported the milk was adulterated. Sanjay Patil, joint commissioner, FDA, said, “This is the first time we have cancelled the licence of a dairy. The action was taken after the report by the state health department.” Though FDA has taken a tough stance in the milk adulteration case, there are still 22 dairies on the loose in the district. But, cops are yet to disclose names. Aandhalkar, in-charge of the cases, said, “The suspected names of dairy owners have been identified. We are verifying evidence, as they are affiliated to political parties. So, we have to be very careful before taking any legal action.” |
