Recession has hit Pune’s RTO
The number of imported vehicles is dipping, the transport authority is losing out on revenue

Nowadays, many new cars, including the much-hyped Nano, can been seen on the city roads. However, according to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorities,the influx of imported cars and bikes has decreased this year, affecting the RTO’s revenue collection. The RTO is attributing the dip to the global slowdown. Chandrakant Kharatmal, Regional Transport Officer of Pune said, “Up until last year, a good number of vehicles were being registered at the Pune RTO. However, in the last ten months, registrations of new vehicles have gone down. Particularly hit is the imported vehicles registration, which has dipped by nearly 75 per cent. And, we are facing revenue losses as a result.” "During 2007, 12 imported motorbikes and 142 cars were registered with us. In the year 2008, 11 bikes were registered with Pune RTO. The number of cars went up considerably in 2008 and 221 new imported cars were registered. However, in the last ten months, or in 2009, we have only had four bikes and 55 imported cars registered with the RTO,” Kharatmal added. Speaking about revenue losses, Kharatmal informed, “Less registrations have resulted in a big revenue loss for us. With registeration revenue, higher the cost of the vehicle, higher the revenue we get through tax. In the last financial year through registration of new vehicles in total, we collected a revenue of Rs 82,64,03,152. While in this financial year, we managed to collect only Rs 76,10,75,506. There is a clear deficit of Rs 6,53,27,646. Through registration of imported vehicles, we collected a revenue of Rs 3,82,70,744. The main reason for the dip in the revenue is the recession. During the recession period, the number of new vehicles registered with the RTO has gone down by 6,701. In the last year, a total of 67,019 vehicles were registered while this year 61,185 vehicles have been registered till date.” |
