City toxicologist honoured by three intl organisations, for his work on toxic substances

His work has been hailed as being instrumental in development of vaccines against malaria, meningitis and is now being used for the H1N1 virus. Dr Mukul Prabhakar Pore received the European Registered Toxicologists certificate from Eurotox (Federation of European Toxicologists & European Societies of Toxicology) last month, making him the first toxicology scientist in the country to get this honour. Not long after, Dr Pore cleared the Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology this month and was also awarded a fellowship by the Indian Toxicology Society. Speaking to Pune Mirror, the researcher said, “The European honour was not for my research as a whole. We conduct research on the effects of toxicological substances before a medicine is launched in the market. The research has helped develop vaccines against diseases like malaria.” He further highlights that getting a certification from a European or an American institution help researchers make their work more acceptable in the global community. Dr Pore is also a founding member of Intox, one of the four companies in India dedicated to study of toxicology. “This is like an approval from the international body. Without submitting the reports on the toxicological substances, a researcher cannot produce, import or distribute. Our work encompasses field exposure studies on human volunteers and livestock for agrochemicals and health monitoring studies for household pesticides. |
