Renowned architect and planner Christopher Charles Benninger has been bestowed with one more laurel. Suzlon One Earth Global Headquarters at Hadapsar, designed by Benninger, was chosen as the best corporate building by the Architects, Engineers and Surveyors’ Association (AESA).

The environment-friendly Suzlon project, which received AESA’s  Best Corporate Building Award, is touted as one of the greenest and most energy-efficient buildings built yet, anywhere.

The award-winning building, Suzlon One Earth, houses the world headquarters of the Suzlon Group of Companies, a leading wind power company globally.

Other award-winning projects of Christopher Benninger in Pune include the Mahindra United World College and Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies.

Speaking exclusively to Pune Mirror  about the Suzlon project, Benninger, said, “The building is diametrically opposite to the glass box structure of most corporate buildings — the ones that are hermetically sealed and air conditioned throughout, such as the ones you find in IT hubs in Hadapsar.

It’s so easy to get lost in one of those. The Suzlon building is more of a garden-centric campus, complete with water pools, waterfalls and a Maharashtrian deep stambh. It is completely in tandem with nature. We’ve purposefully planned it as a low rise.

The design has no glass facades, instead we’ve installed louvers to facilitate the free flow of air into the buiding. Although, it is a large complex of approximately one-million sq ft, it would never negatively overwhelm a visitor.”

Benninger, who runs the eponymous firm Christopher Charles Benninger Architects, elaborated on the energy-efficiency of the building.  “The entire structure is also extremely ecologically sound and environmentally friendly.

We have everything from photo voltaic cells to generate electricity to solar water heaters and water-recycling systems. In fact, even the waste water from the washrooms is re-used to supply the gardens,” he said.

The award is special
The AESA award is very special for Benninger as it has come from the professional body of AESA which is based in Pune.

“It’s always much more heartening to receive an acknowledgement of your work from your peers than from strangers. This award is special because it is from Pune.

It’s the first accolade recognising a project that has been getting a lot of coverage across the world. It is like your child getting his first star at school,” he added.
