After a meeting with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) last month, Maharashtra Prison authorities have decided not to allow construction of an upcoming road passing through the open prison area of Yerwada, leading to Lohegaon Airport.

In July, prison authorities had held up construction of the road by putting up boulders and debris at the site. At the meeting last month, State prison authorities emphasised that PMC should follow the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two authorities in 2008.

“The provisions of the MoU clearly state that PMC should demolish slum hutments built on the land of the open prison and then use the cleared area for road construction. Instead, PMC went ahead with construction on the land without clearing the hutments.

This has violated the MoU signed between the two authorities,” said prison superintendent (Yerwada) Yogesh Desai. Desai said that a meeting with PMC was conducted in this regard and it has been made clear to them that road construction purely on the prison land will not be allowed.

“About 50 per cent of the land for the road has to be taken from the encroached land where the hutments are,” he added. Desai also said that the prison authorities decided not to allow PMC to construct the road until the MoU provisions were followed.

“We will allow them to go ahead with construction once they evict the hutment dwellers from our land,” he said. The road, passing through Yerwada Open Prison is to link Sangamwadi, Lohegaon Airport and Vishrantwadi.

As per PMC’s plan, the road is expected to join the chowk near the Commerce Zone building on Yerwada Jail Road to the Airport-Vishrantwadi Road, a distance of about two kilometres.

The prison administration had given its nod for construction of the road, which would ease the traffic flow between Lohegaon Airport and Pune city, after the MoU was signed in 2008.
