The Shivajinagar police have arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly threatening and trying to extort Rs 25 lakh from a J M Road hotelier over the phone by using the names of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and gangster Chhota Rajan. The accused has been identified as Pravin Ishwar Shetty, a resident of Vadgaonsheri.
According to the police, Shetty used to own a couple of hotels in the city, sold off his hotels over the years and ventured into the land development and construction business. They said he didn’t do well and had financial problems for quite sometime.
On Sunday, hotelier Santosh Shetty (44), a resident of Bhosalenagar, lodged a complaint with the Shivajinagar Police Station stating that a person named Shetty had called him on his cellphone and demanded money from him on Saturday night. Santosh claimed the suspect claimed to be close to gangsters such as Dawood and Rajan.
On Tuesday, a police team comprising Assistant Police Inspector Pramod Waghmare, police constables Bharat Wagh, Rizwan Jinedi, and Shrikant Waghole nabbed Pravin Shetty.
According to the complainant, the accused allegedly threatened to ransack his hotel and brutally attack him. Santosh Shetty told the police that he received similar calls in the past. The Shivajinagar police booked Pravin Shetty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for extortion and issuing threats.
