Vaishali Thorat (26), daughter of a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader from Parbhani, was found dead in suspicious circumstances at her Wakad residence on Sunday afternoon while her husband was found in subconscious state in a neighbouring lodge.
On Monday, Vijay Thorat (34), Vaishali’s husband, was booked by Hinjewadi police under section 302 (punishment for murder) and other relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for dowry harassment and death.

Vaishali’s father Ramrao Wadkute, who is the president of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Sheli-Mendhi Vikas Mahamandal (Goat and Sheep Rearing Development Corporation, Maharashtra State), told Pune Mirror, “It is not a case of suicide.
My daughter was lying on the floor of her house. It was staged to show that she had committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.
But her dupatta was cut into two pieces and did not have the length to reach the ceiling,” he claimed. “I suspect that my son-in-law has killed my daughter. He neither informed the police nor went to the police station.
He had locked her in the apartment. Now, he is saying that he had consumed 100 sleeping pills. This is an utter lie to mislead the investigations,” he said. Wadkute said, “The couple had some domestic disputes.
We, as a family, had attempted to resolve them. Several meetings had taken place but he was not ready to listen to our requests for their peaceful married life.” “I had personally helped my son-inlaw financially on many occasions but the situation did not improve.
I had even given him money to purchase an apartment at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai. I had told him that the apartment should be co-owned by both of them. However, his family members troubled him after hearing this,” he claimed.
Wadkute said Vijay left a Navi Mumbai company he was working in and shifted to Wakad. He joined another company dealing in the distillation business. He was working as a manager there.
“My daughter was five months’ pregnant. We thought their relationship would improve but it worsened. He stopped talking to Vaishali. On November 8, I visited them and Vaishali narrated her plight to me,” he said.
Police Inspector Parshuram Patil of Hinjewadi police station said the post-mortem report revealed that it was a death due to strangulation. Her parents lodged a complaint in this regard. “It is a case of dowry harassment,” he added.
Patil said Vijay has been admitted to a private hospital in Dange Chowk area and the police had arrested his elder brother. Vaishali was a science graduate while Vijay has BE and MBA degrees.
The incident came to light when Vijay called up his father after slitting his wrist. Vaishali’s marriage was solemnised in Nanded on November 22, 2007. NCP leader and home minister RR Patil had attended the function.
