Power cut to Wanowrie, surrounding areas for eight hours as a man climbs up a tree, refuses to come down until he’s had a smoke

Power supply to Wanowrie, Divya Nagar, AFMC Quarters, Wanowrie Bazaar and Salunke Vihar was cut off from 1 am to 10 am on Tuesday after a mentally-disturbed man climbed up a tree on the premises of the Wanowrie Bazaar Police Chowky. It took more than eight hours for city fire brigade officials to persuade the man to climb down. Power supply was restored to the area by 11 am.

The man who climbed up the tree was identified as 33-year-old Chandraprakash Kol. Senior Police Inspector Bajirao Mohite of Wanowrie Police Station said that Kol and his brother had come to Pune Railway Station late on Monday night. Both stayed at the railway station, but Kol left the station.
 
“He was roaming the streets in undergarments. Army men, who were patrolling the area, spotted him on the road and chased him. This prompted Kol to run, enter the chowky premises and immediately climb up the tree,” he added.

After he was rescued, he was taken to safety inside the Wanowrie Police Chowky. His brother came there looking for him and told officials he was mentally unstable

Ten firemen from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) rushed to the spot with a fire engine. Fireman Rajaram Kedari was instrumental in persuading Kol to climb down.

The emergency call was received at 1.55 am and a team reached the spot at 2 am. firemen climbed the tree in the dark and persuaded Kol to climb down, but he climbed higher. At dawn, Kol told firemen he had not eaten for a few days.

He asked for a bidi. Firemen gave him two cigarettes to smoke, after which he agreed to get into the hydraulic bucket. During the descent, Kol leapt out of the bucket from a height of 15 feet, but landed safely.

A mentally-disturbed man climbed 35-feet up a Jamun tree on the Wanowrie police chowky premises at 1 am and stayed there until 10.15 am as onlookers gathered
The fire brigade tried to get him down, but the man kept climbing higher. High voltage wires were too close, so MSEDCL shut power to Wanowrie, Divya Nagar and AFMC
It was at dawn that the man, identified as Kol, spoke. He said he was hungry and asked for bidis. Firemen gave him two cigarettes that he smoked and agreed to come down
Kol was lowered in a hydraulic bucket at 10.15, but suddenly jumped out of it while he was still about 15 ft above the ground
