Yerwada inmates will button it up!

Prison replaces nadas on inmates’ British-era uniforms with buttons to prevent murders, suicides aided by drawstrings

After alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Mohammed Qateel Siddiqui (27) was ‘strangled’ to death in the high-security Anda Cell of the Yerwada Central Prison in June this year, it was suspected that his prison uniform’s pants’ nada (drawstring) had been used by citybased goons Sharad Mohol and Alok Bhalerao to murder him.

Fearing more such possible murder attempts and suicides using drawstrings, prison authorities have now introduced a major change in the inmates’ uniform — replacing the nadas with buttons on prisoners’ pyjamas. After the murder, prison authorities had studied the feasibility of replacing the drawstrings with buttons on the white uniform of jail inmates, which incidentally has been unchanged since the British era.

Prison superintendent Yogesh Desai confirmed to Mirror that the nadas have been replaced by buttons, adding, “Now, incidents of suicide and murder like that of Siddiqui will not be repeated.” The jail administration stitches the uniforms from cloth prepared in the jail’s textile industry unit.

At present, there are about 3,500 inmates in Yerwada prison and buttons have been replaced for all uniforms. However, the decision is yet to be implemented in other prisons in the state. In the last five years, two suicide bids have taken place in different jails with the deceased using drawstrings to commit suicide.

In other cases, inmates used blankets, industrial ropes and other material to try and kill themselves. Though Yerwada had already amended the dress code for its inmates, prison authorities say every inmate’s size differs — and while some are in prison for a few days, others are imprisoned for life.

One officer said, “After an inmate leaves jail, his uniform is given to another inmate. If buttons are used, the prison has to stitch a uniform according to the waist size of every new prisoner, and every time an inmate leaves, a new uniform will have to be stitched.”
