Kondhwa police on Tuesday arrested a couple on charges of cheating a 29-year-old lawyer by allegedly promising that she would be reunited with her lover with the help of black magic.

The suspects have been identified as Behroz Dastur Sehgal (42) and her husband Feroze Shavak Dadachhanji (54), residents of Phursungi. The duo was produced before court and remanded in police custody till Thursday. The police recovered five dolls, Rs 20,000 in cash, two cheques of a private bank, a book published by California Tarot House.
 
Out of the cash Rs 18,000 was part of the sum the victim had paid the duo. Kondhwa police said, Sehgal allegedly studied black magic and witchcraft in California and knew how to control a person with spells.

She had opened an office in Kondhwa, stating that she could solve domestic problems by using her ‘magic’. The lawyer, who is a resident of Karvenagar, approached her citing that her lover had been bewitched by another woman and said she wanted him back desperately.

Sehgal allegedly demanded a fee of Rs 52,000 saying she had supernatural powers to sort her relationship and make the latter’s life beautiful. The fee was paid to her a few months ago. After three months, the victim went to Sehgal’s office but was abused by Dadachhanji when she enquired about the results and her money. The victim then approached Kondhwa PS and lodged a complaint.
