The mandal has decided to move the temple 15 metres away from the present spot

The issue of shifting a Ganpati mandal’s temple in the vicinity of Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai temple complex was resolved amicably on Saturday in a meeting held at the Vishrambaug police station.

The atmosphere was tense at Budhwar Chowk following the detention of three persons after they vehemently protested police action, in which the police replaced the lock at the temple with their own late on Monday.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had issued orders to clear all encroachments around the Shrimant Dagduseth Halwai Ganapati temple complex due to security concerns.

Senior Police Inspector Arjun Sakunde of Vishrambaug police station, said, “It has been decided that the temple will be shifted 15 metres away from the present spot near a bus stop. All concerned parties have accepted this. Hence, the dispute is over for us.” The Vishrambaug police returned the keys of Ganpati Mandal’s temple, which they had kept with themselves.

The meeting took place at Vishrambaug Police Station in the presence of Joint Police Commissioner Sanjeev Singhal, local politicians and mandal workers. Shiv Sena city unit vice-president Rajendra Shinde, MNS corporator Rupali Patil and Patit Pavan Sanghatana’s Mukund Chavan attended the meet. Earlier, these leaders visited the municipal commissioner and Singhal to find a solution to the issue.

Shinde told Pune Mirror, “The PMC and others involved know that the temple has been here since 1970. So, the police took a soft stand and returned the keys. The PMC will allot space near the bus stop to the mandal.” PMC OSD, anti-encroachment, Ramesh Shelar said, “We were asking police to shift the idols elsewhere so that we could remove the structure, which they had refused to do earlier. I can’t comment on the solution that has come out in the meeting.”
