On Tuesday, the court of Additional Sessions Judge S D Tekale sentenced two youth who killed a 19- year-old because the lid of his soda bottle hit one of them. Amol Thite (25), who knifed the youth to death was awarded a life sentence, while Amit Banpel will face a year of rigorous imprisonment.
Police sniffer dog ‘Surya’ had played a vital role in nabbing Thite. Surya identified him on the basis of a slipper found at the spot near hotel Abhishek. The dog then led police to his residence in Shukrawar Peth.
The deceased, identified as Wasim Anwar Khan, is a resident of Jijamata Nagar in Yerwada. His uncle Nisar Musa Inamdar (38) had filed an FIR with Khadak Police Station.
Additional Public Prosecutor (addl PP) Ujjwala Raskar examined eleven witness including an eye witness who was the uncle of the deceased. As per the complaint, the deceased Inamdar had gone for a drink to Hotel Abhishek at Rashtrabhushan Chowk located 200 metres away from Khadak Police Station. When the lid of a soda bottle hit Thite, Inamdar and he had an argument.
Khan, who intervened to calm them down, ended up getting stabbed. Khan was shifted to Sassoon hospital, but died enroute. Addl PP Raskar said, “Sniffer dog Surya who was brought to the crime scene identified Thite’s footwear and led police to his home.”
Raskar said that as Thite wa directly involved in the crime, he was awarded a life sentence. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. Banpel, who has already spent nine months in jailhas been fined Rs 2,000.”
