The Times They Are a-Changin’, and Shiv Sena doesn’t want to be left behind. In an attempt to catch up with the mores of the new generation and attract them into the party fold, Sena has decided to interview candidates seeking party posts.

This is a major shift from the decades-old practice at the Sena, where such appointments would be made at Matoshri, and made public in the party mouthpiece Saamana.

Now, however, the party has ask the candidates to submit their resumes – which must include a mention of the social work done by the applicant – at the party head quarters at Sena Bhavan, Dadar.

Sources say the idea was mooted by party executive president, Uddhav Thackeray, in an attempt to make the party’s functioning more transparent.

Sources say, the party hopes, this will help younger party members get key posts in the Sena, helping it to regain some of the ground lost to its adversary, the  Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

In fact, a selection committee – comprising Sanjay Raut, Diwakar Raote, Arvind Sawant, Dattaji Nalawade, Anant Tare, Subash Desai and Vilas Avchat – has been formed.

The committee is now busy interviewing candidates for various posts and they will send the shortlisted ones to Thackeray. The results will be declared in February.

Nalawade, a former Speaker in the State Assembly, said, “Uddhavaji proposed this idea, as he wanted that the grassroots workers also get a chance to hold office posts.

“We have a very good response for this selection method.”

The selection is for office posts in Mumbai. Nalawade said that this time – due to delimitation of the constituencies – there are more posts up for grabs.

“Additionally, while earlier a vibhag pramukh would be assigned six constituencies, now the officer will be asked to handle only three. Also, there will be a up (deputy) vibhag pramukh in every constituency.”

However, party leader Subash Desai insisted that it’s only the interviews and resumes that make this selection process any different. “As a practice we always appoint office bearers after a discussion with the concerned party members.”
