They made it appear like she was murdered by ‘thieves’ who broke into their house in Dwarika Sai Heritage, Pimpale Saudagar and attacked her when she put up stiff resistance. The post-mortem But their lies were exposed when, in a dramatic turn of events, Smita’s post-mortem report revealed the cause of death to be strangulation. The arrests The Sangvi police on Tuesday arrested Smita’s husband Deepak Vitthal Satpute (34), father-in-law Vitthal Satpute (62) and mother-in-law Vimal Satpute (54) on the charges of murder after Smita’s mother Rajani Vasant Hagwane lodged her complaint against them. Smita’s family in distress Smita’s brother Pawan Hagwane, who works with a software company in Australia, had rushed to Pune after hearing about the incident. He alleged that Smita’s in-laws were not happy with Deepak and Smita’s union and they brainwashed him into participating in the crime. A distressed Pawan told Pune Mirror, “My sister married Deepak on July 11, 2004. It was an arranged marriage. Deepak’s parents wanted him to marry the daughter of one of their relatives, but that did not happen. And so the marriage proposal passed on to us and they eventually got married. But, immediately a month after the wedding, Deepak’s parents’ disappointment with their son’s marriage started reflecting in their behaviour towards my sister. But this was just the beginning. Slowly, they started pressuring Deepak, resulting in a souring of Deepak and Smita’s relations.” He added, “Things went from bad to worse and finally reached such a height that the couple decided to opt for a divorce in 2006. But the legal procedure was taking some time, and since Deepak had nothing against Smita, the two started getting closer again and eventually patched up.” Pawan continued, “We were happy that things were going on well between them. But our happiness was short-lived. On Monday night, my mother, who stays in Nashik, got a call from the Satputes that Smita was attacked by robbers who had forced entry inside the house. The Satputes said they were not in the house at that time. They said Smita showed stiff resistence and got killed as a result. A complaint was then lodged at the Sangvi police station. “After hearing about the incident, I flew to Pune on Wednesday morning. We are in a state of shock. We still can’t come to terms with the fact that Smita is not with us any more,” he said. New case filed Following the post-mortem report, Rajani Hagwane filed a fresh case of murder against the Satpute trio. Inspector R S Yadav of Sangvi police station said, “A detailed scan of the house did not give us any clue of a break-in by robbers. The post-mortem report also pointed towards death by strangulation. We then dug deeper and found about Smita’s miserable marriage." "Rajani Hagwane also confirmed that Smita was being mentally and physically tortured by her husband and in-laws. Hagwane then lodged a complaint against Deepak and his parents, after which we arrested them. They were produced at the Shivajinagar court on Wednesday and have been remanded to police custody till October 17. The investigations are on and we are yet to reach to the core of the case.” |
