The imbroglio between Hockey India and World Series Hockey continues to wage on.
Narendra Batra, HI secretary
All 16 members of the Indian Olympic team are among the 90 domestic players who have signed up for the players' auction of the Hockey India League scheduled to be held from January 5 to February 3, 2013.
This will have an impact on the Nimbus-promoted World Series Hockey (WSH) scheduled from December 15 to January 20. Narender Batra, the secretary of Hockey India, spoke to Mirror on some of the issues.
What is the process if some of the players who are playing in WSH want to return to Hockey India?
I am not interested in retired players. The people who actually have potential have already sent us apology letters. Gurjinder Singh (Punjab player, who won the best defender award in the Senior Nationals) and threefour others have sent. The committee will talk to them and send the report with recommendations to FIH.
Will the WSH Players be selected for the national camp to start in two weeks? (Two of the three players who were awarded for their performance in Senior Nationals are aligned with WSH.)
I am not going to talk about WSH. The rules regarding sanctioned and unsanctioned players will apply for selection. I can’t take FIH head on. (Federation of International Hockey)
But FIH didn’t have any problem when Rehan Butt and few others from Pakistan, who were aligned with WSH, played the Olympics?
When were their contracts signed? It was in Nov-Dec 2010. The regulation over sanction against WSH became applicable on April 1, 2011. It doesn’t apply to anyone who signed before that. In India, some players tried to show they had also signed before that. It’s easy to get back-dated cheques here. But you can’t sign the papers in October 2010 and have the cheques in bank in October 2011. It’s not possible. You can make out there is some fraud going on.
How do the players, who want to represent HI, get out of WSH?
They have one-year cooling period. You don’t play there next year and then come back to us.
WSH have sent a legal notice to Sardar Singh. What now?
I spoke to Sardar yesterday (Monday); he said he hasn’t got anything. But Yannick Colaco has said that he has issued a legal notice. Woh bahut kuch bolta hai (he says alot). He is paid to talk.
Any peace possible between WSH and HI?
That’s history now.
