Lewis Hamilton crashed out of his first drive for Mercedes at 160 miles an hour. The 28-year-old had completed just 14 laps at Jerez in Spain when his car speared straight on at Dry Sack Bend and slowly nudged the barriers.

It left a 35 metre mark on the tarmac and parallel grooves for another 35 metres deep into the sand trap which halted in the barriers.

Eye witnesses said the impact was not hard and he climbed out of the cockpit and was driven back to the pits. His W04 race machine which had only taken to the circuit the day before had to be hoisted onto a flatbed trailer and transported back to the pits.

It was the first time he had got in the cockpit and was second fastest of the 11 drivers taking part in the second day’s testing for the first test for the coming season. The covers had only come off the car two days earlier.

Mercedes have had a troubled christening of their new car. The day before teammate Nico Rosberg completed just 13 laps before he pulled off with electrical problems and a backdraught of fuel caught fire.

It put an end to the day’s action and meant Mercedes, bidding to make up for a poor season last year that cost boss Norbert Haug his job, lost crucial track time. Rosberg ended that day eighth fastest, two seconds slower than pacesetter Jenson Button for Mercedes.

DI RESTA 4TH FASTEST

Sahara Force India driver Paul di Resta drove the new brand VJM06 for the second time and managed the fourthfastest time on the second day of the pre-season testing, here yesterday. In all, the Scot did 89 laps and his fastest lap came in one minute 20.343 seconds.
