Hooked or crookSunday, November 28, 2010,01:17:15 AM
Of course some people were shocked. Some were hurt and disappointed. But a lot were just happy they could gossip (or write lengthy opinion columns) about writers of columns. ....

Such a long storySunday, October 24, 2010,01:39:20 AM
When they banned the book, that’s all people could talk about for a while. The book was taken off the list on the request of several people who thought their feelings would be hurt by its existence. And the authorities knew it was important not to make the people feel bad. The offended party hadn’t done much for a while and were getting a bit restless, bored of just fidgeting in their seats. ....

In case of emergencySunday, October 17, 2010,12:15:03 AM
There’s a scene in movies, most movies, where everything seems urgent. It has to happen or else. He has to get on that plane. She has to send a postcard. The car must cross that finish line. ET must go home, Willy must go free. Everything in between seems to exist to heighten the drama. The red traffic lights on the way, the cows and stray dogs on the road, the security guards, the woman ....

She wanted to reply and then decided against it. Over 140 characters, she thought. Not really worth it.....

Anthem angstSunday, September 05, 2010,01:42:46 AM
The games had been in the spotlight for ages and for the wrong reasons. Everything was running late and they wondered whether things would be ready on time. ....

Side trackedSunday, August 22, 2010,12:36:17 AM
Let’s buy cycles, someone suggested. It seemed like a way out. Traffic had begun to resemble metro rush hour and this city wasn’t a metro. A lot of residents still imagined it a town, indulgently ignoring its rapid growth. Cycle, they began to say. Don’t drive — at least once a week. A couple of decades ago, that’s how most of them travelled anyway — to school, to meet friends and to run ....

Stay safeSaturday, July 31, 2010,11:29:23 PM
It seemed important enough an event to shut down. Maybe it was the name of the group performing that prompted it, the music they played or the kind of audience it drew. Other shows much like this one, had gone on till the early hours of the morning uninterrupted. This one was stopped on time. People went home disappointed. The police had picked up their phones. The law was enforced. The ....

Blue skies aheadSaturday, July 24, 2010,09:31:44 PM
The skies had been cloudy for days. Perfect weather, they felt. It was perfect for a lot of things. Hot chocoate, tea and fried snacks, snuggling under the covers with a book. Overcast skies, temperature not hot but not cold at all. Treks and weekend getaways turned romantic movies, songs and other popular conventions demanded that. Why do we have to work on beautiful days like these, said friend....

The joy of winningSaturday, June 26, 2010,09:47:01 PM
Even before the world cup started all people could talk about was it would star taking over their lives. They prepared in advance. Buying new television sets, t-shirts that displayed their loyalties. All across the city, in offices, pubs and after work in homes that’s all that played on television sets. Channels tried, in vain, to regain their attention with newer, sexier shows. Bands played to large ....

I belong hereSaturday, June 19, 2010,10:01:10 PM
The internet was full of reactions after an article that demanded responses from readers, and made them rethink their patriotism, was published. It was easy to make reactions public online. It doesn’t matter who published what in print — online it’s easier to respond, generate discussions, always more volunteers available to comment, each multi-tasking at every opportunity. I don’t belong ....

Rainy day bluesSaturday, June 12, 2010,10:09:49 PM
Where do we head to from here?” said one young man in anti-glare, zero prescription glasses, as he stepped out of a concert into a car driven by a girl finally enjoying a good hair day. The monsoon was finally showing signs of having actually begun and they wanted to eat before the partying began. But on a Friday night, ordering food included a half hour wait. So, they moved from one to ....

Green daySaturday, June 05, 2010,07:52:43 PM
There was one day meant to save the earth. Global warming, unnatural disasters and oil spills made people feel guilty occasionally. So guilty, that when something went wrong, they blamed it on themselves. Themselves as a whole — people. People should stop using up natural resources at such a fast pace and people should find alternative sources of energy, they said ....

Forbidden fruitSunday, May 30, 2010,12:10:53 AM
When one technology giant overtook another, lots of people talked about how wonderful it was. They analysed the situation and wrote lengthy articles about how such a change could have happened. Fanboys rejoiced and put up fawning posts about the topic. It was all that occupied techsites most of the day. The new king of technology was more likeable than the old one. At least it was more acceptable to like them than the old one. In another part of ....

BorderlineSunday, May 23, 2010,06:46:52 PM
Once there was a summer with nothing to do. Nothing, of course, was subjective. Most people started getting bored over the weekends and blamed ‘nothing’ no cricket and no movies. They stayed up late at night talking and watching re-runs on television of shows that were played earlier that day. The feeling of inertia seeped in with moments seeming like they were almost on the ....

Metro logicSaturday, May 15, 2010,11:05:08 PM
There was once a girl who lived in a city which was expanding so fast that people decided that regular roads weren’t good enough for them to travel on any more. They needed flyovers, underpasses and soon even a brand new rail system to connect them closer to each other, that’s what they said. The girl sat back and listened while people talked about how the new rail system was very ....

Rolling the dieSunday, May 09, 2010,12:15:12 AM
When he was finally condemned to death, a lot of people cheered. He deserved it, they said. I can’t believe they took so long to decide his fate. Especially after watching what he did over and over again on TV. And then there were those who were sure that death was not a human decision. It should be unexpected or at least, unplanned. The punishment turned into debates over dinner, TV, hashtags and blogs. He obviously didn’t plan it. He only executed ....

What’s-its-nameSunday, April 25, 2010,12:53:12 AM
Of course when there was a volcano that spewed up ash that occupied air space, the world stood still. At least, part of the world did. Travellers, not knowing when they were ever going to get home (or leave it) gave worried interviews for international news agencies, read blogs about what they could do with their new found transit time and counted their rising blood pressure.....

Before play beginsSunday, April 18, 2010,01:26:52 AM
There already was a hype around it. After all, the most loved sport, adopted and considered national even though it wasn’t, got faster, louder and more prime time than ever before. People cheered harder for new teams that they claimed long-standing ties with, even though ‘home’ grounds were home to only a handful of the players. So naturally, when the opportunity for more cities in which ....
