After two boys were run over by a PMPML bus and and trapped underneath, passers-by displayed immense strength in numbers, to join hands and lift the bus to rescue them.

Brute strength saved the day, after a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus rammed into a bike and ran over two boys at the Gyaneshwar Paduka Chowk on Friday afternoon. Onlookers lifted the bus with their bare hands, saving the lives of the two boys, who were trapped under the bus.

The PMPML bus, coming from Wadarwadi, encountered a red signal at the Gyaneshwar Paduka Chowk, and 4-5 vehicles standing in front of it, waiting for the signal to turn green. The bus, however, didn't stop on time and rammed into two boys who were on a two-wheeler. The boys were run over with such force that they went under the bus, which stopped only after colliding with the traffic signal post.

In the ensuing commotion, over 50 onlookers rushed to the spot and realised that the two boys were still trapped underneath the bus. The onlookers lifted the bus with their bare hands and extricated the boys. Fire brigade officials rushed to the spot, and lifted the bus using a crane. The bus was moved to the Shivajinagar Police Station, while the boys were rushed to the Poona Hospital in Sadashiv Peth.

The two boys have been identified as Ashwin Doshi and Siddharth Dudu, both residents of Hirachand Nemchand Digambar Jain Boarding School at Model Colony. Doshi, a resident of Satara, is a second year engineering student from the Maharashtra Institute of Technology, while Dudu, who hails from Solapur, is a first year commerce student at Modern College. Both boys are said to be out of danger now.

When contacted, Dr Vaibhav Deshpande of Poona Hospital, said Dudu was the more serious of the two, and has been admitted to the ICU. "His condition is stable now. He had injuries to his left lung as well as external injuries to the head, but he's improving," he said. A nurse, under conditions of anonymity, said Doshi received injuries to his legs and chest, but he is better now, and is even talking to visitors.

The driver of the bus, identified as Manik Waghmode, 51, said, "There was a brake failure, and I lost control of bus. I have done five trips on the route and was on my sixth trip when accident occurred."

Police Inspector Hiraman Shirsath of the Shivajinagar Police Station, confirmed that a brake failure was the likely cause of the problem. "The air pressure on the gauge was showing, but things can only be confirmed once we finish our investigation. We have sent the driver for a medical test to check whether he was drunk at the time of the incident," Shirsath said.

Deepak Singh Pardesi, spokesperson of PMPML, said, "Apart from the regular servicing, we do docking of each bus after every 9,000 kilometres. Mechanics scrutinise the machine condition, brake system, oiling and greasing of the buses during docking. Each bus goes through this procedure. So we will conduct a departmental inquiry and investigate the case to know how the lapse happened. We can only know whether it was the fault of the driver or the bus after we're done with this inquiry."

Waghmode has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 339 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code, and also the Motor Vehicle Act 184.
